Maggie Fisher
Director of Programs

Maggie knows firsthand what it means to face a breast cancer diagnosis and to come out the other side with a renewed sense of purpose. As a breast cancer survivor, certified cancer coach, and Director of Programs for Going Beyond the Pink, Maggie brings both professional expertise and deeply personal experience to every aspect of her work. Her cancer journey changed her. "I'm awake now and much more aware of my surroundings and those around me," she says. "I've learned that I want to do everything in my power to keep positive energy around me." That shift in perspective is at the heart of how Maggie shows up for every survivor and patient she supports.

With more than 25 years of experience in healthcare program development, clinical operations, and community outreach, Maggie has spent her career building programs that improve lives. She played a pivotal role in developing the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Survivors Network, one of the first digital platforms created specifically for cancer survivors and caregivers and has worked with leading health systems, nonprofits, and digital health organizations across the country.

At Going Beyond the Pink, Maggie develops and delivers educational workshops, manages the Mammogram Access Fund, leads community partnerships, and serves as a trusted resource for patients and survivors navigating one of the most challenging experiences of their lives.

Maggie holds certifications in oncology patient navigation and cancer coaching from the GW Cancer Center, the Cancer Wellness Institute, and BeatCancer.org, as well as a Master's degree in Instructional Design from Marymount University. She lives just outside Wilmington, NC with her husband and their two rescue dogs.

Board of Directors

Kara Kenan - Founder, Board Member

Kara Kenan is the Founder of Going Beyond the Pink and now serves as a Board Member. Since launching the organization, Kara has led its growth from a grassroots initiative into a trusted community resource supporting individuals impacted by breast cancer through education, navigation, and survivorship programming.
During her tenure as Executive Director, Kara oversaw the development and expansion of core programs including REACH Survivor’s Symposium, What’s Normal, What’s Not (WNWN), the Breast Health Peer Educator (BHPE) initiative, and Pink Squad, and expanded community partnerships across North Carolina. Under her leadership, GBTP strengthened its grant portfolio, deepened hospital and community relationships, and broadened its reach and impact.
Kara remains committed to the organization’s mission and continues to support its long-term vision as a founding board member. Her passion for empowering patients and strengthening survivorship care remains at the heart of her work.
Shailah Strayhorn-Carter, PhD - Board Member

Dr. Strayhorn-Carter is a social epidemiologist whose research focuses on the intersection of social support and physical activity among African American cancer survivors. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Research Methods at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW).
Prior to her role at UNCW, Dr. Strayhorn-Carter earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Spelman College, a Master of Public Health from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Social Behavioral Science from the University of Memphis School of Public Health. She also completed a postdoctoral fellowship with the Cancer Education and Career Development Program at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Bernadette Fedziuk, MSN, FNP - Board Member

Bernadette Fedziuk brings more than 40 years of healthcare experience to the Going Beyond the Pink board. She earned her BSN from Hunter College in New York City in 1979 and began her career as an ICU nurse at major medical centers throughout New York. After relocating and raising her family, she went on to earn her MSN as a Family Nurse Practitioner from UNC Charlotte and has been practicing in that role since 2003.
Over the course of her career, Bernadette has practiced across a broad range of clinical settings, including emergency care, urgent care, hospice, family medicine, urology, gerontology, and women's health. She currently serves two days per week at the Brunswick County Detention Facility clinic. Throughout her career, she has been guided by a deeply held philosophy of patient-centered care — one she brings to every clinical encounter.
Bernadette's commitment to GBTP is both professional and personal. Around the time she transitioned to her current role, she received a diagnosis of aggressive DCIS of the right breast. She chose to undergo an SGAP reconstruction procedure through the Center for Natural Breast Reconstruction in Charleston, and her experience as a patient has deepened her understanding of — and commitment to — the breast cancer survivor community.
Bernadette resides in Wilmington with her husband, a urologist. She is the proud mother of two adult children and a grandmother to a growing family. She is honored to serve on the GBTP board and looks forward to contributing to its mission.
Michael Hudson - Board Member

Michael Hudson is a Senior Vice President and Wealth Advisor with Farther, a fiduciary wealth management firm, he has spent more than 30 years helping individuals and families navigate the financial decisions that matter most. His areas of expertise include tax planning, retirement income strategies, estate planning, and risk management — skills that translate directly to supporting Going Beyond the Pink's mission of providing financial assistance and resources to those impacted by breast cancer.
As an Accredited Investment Fiduciary®, Michael is bound by a standard of always placing clients' interests first — a commitment that extends naturally to his community involvement. He brings to the board not only financial stewardship experience but a genuine understanding of how unexpected medical costs can upend a family's financial stability.
Michael previously served as President of the Cape Fear Museum Board, and understands firsthand the governance, fundraising, and community partnership work required to grow a mission-driven organization.
Michael and his wife, Deanna, have called Wilmington home for over 30 years and are deeply rooted in the Southeastern NC community. They are proud parents of their daughter, Caroline. Michael is honored to support Going Beyond the Pink and its work empowering patients, survivors, and families throughout the Cape Fear region.
